Espion provided commentary on a recently seen online scam that saw and Irish version of the well known and highly recognised “Nigerian scam” offering an unlikely sum of money to the recipient of the e-mail if only he or she sends all personal banking details to a person, usually based in Nigeria. A more appropriate subject heading in these emails might be the Irish proverb “ní mar a shíltear a bhítear” (things aren’t as they seem).

Espion provided some insight to the denial of service attach on the CAO sight which rendered it inaccessible by legitmate users. Attacks of this nature are usually done simply for bragging rights in the hacker community. Every website is vulnerable to these kinds of attack but usually hackers go after more high-profile sites such as Amazon or eBay, with the White House being a classic target. Individuals with a large digital footprint can be targets for identity theft, as cyber criminals are able to piece together enough details to masquerade as someone they are not.
